55. He discovered that

Quigley was doing whatever he wanted. He more or less ruled Wild Bay. He had set up his own timber-cutting operations with an assistant called Wendell and the Government didn’t do anything about it. By using the Company ships and his personal connections in St John's and Cardiff, pretending that he was always acting for the Company and in the best interests of Jeffrey, Quigley was making a huge pile. He was the real power behind everything that went on in Wild Bay. Nothing was allowed to happen without his say so. He had acquired lucrative timber licences around Hawkes Bay, Sandwich Bay and probably elsewhere as well. He was making at least $10,000 a year from the Company store. He was a dictator in the place. He ran the operations firstly for himself and secondly, if at all for Jeffrey.
Jeffrey sentimentally believed that his son and Kevin were the best of friends. And so they were when they had been working in Finland together. However, when the ravishing Russian beauty, 19 year old Loga Chenobog turned up one day with her father Sergei Naumov nothing was ever the same again."
"Do you know anything more about Loga Chenobog?" said Corporal Dawson.
"No I am sorry that is as much as I can tell you."
"You have been extremely helpful Eric, I'm sure you have done the right thing in telling me everything you know. If you can think of anything else please do not hesitate to contact me immediately. Here's my card with my telephone number and address."
"Yes; alright I will. Goodbye then."
"Goodbye, you will definitely hear from me again."
