Later on that day, Cpl. Ian Dawson flew in to speak with Richard. He told him that they had just finished formally interviewing Samuel and Lizzie Gray, Ron Placket (Alice had died some time ago), Winston James, Ben and Abbie Lovell; that ex-Ranger Spiller was dead and that he fully expected to have other important news tomorrow. Their conversation lasted through to the early hours before they warmly shook hands and Dawson returned to Deer Lake his home.
It wasn't until 2 o'clock in the afternoon that the Coming Home Celebrations were officially opened. The Hall of the Community Centre had been packed to overflowing. A great many people were introduced to the audience including Richard Ap Meurig as one of the guests of honour which he found a very humbling experience.
